Fall Owl Hat - A free knitting pattern to learn cables and knitting in the round

I have a wife and one daughter which means I have learned everything there is to know about women… right? While I know none of you will believe this (even if it is true) there is one thing that I know to be a fact: ladies love owls.

Many a time I have seen my wife browsing through target for home décor, not impressed by anything, when all of a sudden she halts… “This is cute, it has an owl on it!”. Clothes shopping for my daughter is no different! I am not sure if she has a t-shirt that doesn’t either have an owl or a llama on it.

In an attempt to gain some points in my ladies’ eyes I decided to knit my daughter an owl hat. Now, I have knit things for my daughter before and she is usually not that impressed. Believe it or not a 6-year-old doesn’t quit appreciate the effort that goes into homemade. I know, strange, but true. I told her I was going to make her an owl hat and she immediate got excited. She watched me working on it with anticipation. When I was done, she couldn’t wait to put it on. It was now HER owl hat. My wife liked it so much she begged me to make one for her!

In developing this pattern, I was reminded of a few things about knitting. Sometimes we get bored with the simple. It is important to remember that sometimes less is more. While this pattern uses some intermediate techniques, it is actually quite simple. This is a great way to introduce a knitter to cables as well as knitting in the round.

I am a big believer in learning on the job. This pattern will allow you to learn some more advanced techniques but also be able to create something beautiful in the process.
