Do Women Appreciate a Man Who Knits?

I have a pretty vivid memory of the first week my wife and I dated. It happened to be the week of thanksgiving as well as the week of my wife’s birthday.

For her birthday I took her to a very small yet high end local Italian restaurant. This was our first REAL date. We had a wonderful time, shared a splendid conversation but that all came to a quick end when the check came… I had forgotten my wallet! Not being well versed in dating overall I didn’t know what to do! I was panicking and while the whole moment probably only lasted a few seconds I thought it was over. She paid. We drove back to her apartment and I had never felt so embarrassed in my 24 years on earth.

When we arrived back at apartment, I had a couple of birthday gifts for her so we went upstairs. I presented her a vase that I had purchased for $8 at a local craft show the day before for as well as some mittens that I had knitted for her out of hand spun, hand died alpaca wool. After I thought I had ruined my chances forever I suddenly was back up on top! Nothing says I love you like handmade! My wife still wears those mittens today and that vase displays a half dozen knit roses I made for her the following valentines day.

Throughout our marriage I have continued to knit things for my wife and now for our two children. She knows the time it takes to create these works of love but more importantly she is impressed when I “get it right”.

If I can give one piece of advice on knitting things for family or friends, it would be focus on “getting it right”. Make sure you are making them something that fits their personality, they will use, that fits their style and that will not get shoved in a closet for time and all eternity! Taking the time to pick the right pattern for that person makes the gift even more special to them. And of course it helps to point out why you chose this for them specifically.

Roses are a symbol. Red roses symbolize love and romance. White roses symbolize innocence and purity. Pink roses symbolize gratitude and joy. Yellow roses symbolize friendship. Even the number of roses you give sends a message. This pattern can be knit in any color you desire so that you can send the appropriate message to the right person. Choose the right color and the right number of roses to fit the person and the occasion.

This pattern knits up very fast and is as simple as it gets. Use it for valentines day, mothers day, birthdays and more.
